Located on the northern edge of the Tanami Desert in the tropics, Lajamanu is a vibrant Warlpiri community with a population of around 750 people, including the smaller outstation Lultju. It is the only main community situated in the Northern Tanami ward.

The Warnayaka Art Centre has a focus on the maintenance and transference of culture, and this is achieved through close liaison between artists, elders, educational institutions and other agencies in Lajamanu.
