Central Desert Regional Council prioritises sustainable solid waste management governance in its communities. Towards this end, Council has a Waste Management Strategy 2023-2027 with the objectives of co-opting the Waste Hierarchy and Circular Economy principles. This approach addresses gaps and updates practices to align with the industry’s best practice. In the strategy, the Council aims to:
- Provide efficient and sustainable solid waste management services that are equitable across communities
- Effectively engage with all stakeholders to promote reuse, recycling, litter prevention and energy recovery as methods to achieve waste reduction
- Provide opportunities for local Council staff to feel empowered, well trained and confident in implementing identified waste management priorities
- Ensure that Council waste management systems are robust and effective in reducing material going to landfills
- Ensure that landfills are compliant with legislation and regulatory frameworks
Council will upgrade data collection systems and implement various measures to promote compliance and minimise illegal dumping. Central Desert Regional Council will enter into partnerships with industry and Regional peers to address the twin challenges of low economies of scale and technology gaps.
